US Supreme Court Upholds Indefinite Confinement

An anonymous reader points out the news that the US Supreme Court today upheld a law that allows the Federal government to keep prison inmates behind bars beyond the end of their sentences, if officials determine they may be “sexually dangerous” in the future. The case involves one Graydon Comstock, who was certified as “dangerous” six days before his 37-month federal prison term for processing child pornography was to end. The vote was 7 to 2 and three of the justices who concurred with the decision raised an objection to the broadness of the language used in the majority opinion (written by Justice Kennedy).

angry tapir writes “French lawmakers have voted to approve a draft law to filter Internet traffic that Slashdot previously discussed. The government says the measure is intended to catch child pornographers. The Senate, where the government has a majority, will soon give the bill a second reading. If the Senate makes no amendments to the text, that will also be its final reading, as the government has declared the bill “urgent,” a procedural move that reduces the usual cycle of four readings to two.”

Clandestine_Blaze writes “Chinese police have arrested 5,394 people — with another 4,186 criminal cases in the works — in one of the largest crackdowns on Internet porn in the country. Even more arrests are expected in 2010, according to the Ministry of Public Security’s website (In Chinese or Google translated into English). According to the Reuters article on the crackdown, one of the justifications was that the pornography was ‘threatening the emotional health of children.’ From the English translation of the Ministry of Public Security’s website linked above, it appears that certain provinces are also offering 1,000 yuan and 2,000 yuan rewards, per person, for reporting illegal websites to the government.”

Australian Govt. Proposes Internet "Panic Button" For Kids

CuteSteveJobs writes “Children who feel they are being bullied, harassed or groomed online could call for help instantly using a ‘panic button’ on their PCs under a plan by the Australian Government’s cyber-safety working group. The button shall look like a ‘friendly dolphin,’ who will connect the child victim instantly to police or child protection groups. Australian Internet Censorship Advocate Hetty ‘Save the Children’ Johnson says the Internet needs something like 000 or 911. Will this be another scheme wasting taxpayer dollars in lieu of parental supervison, or could it actually work? Are 1 in 4 children really sexually abused by the Internet? Can flaming and trolling be classified as bullying?”
