Apple will be finally releasing their most eagerly awaited next generation mobile operating system – iOS 5 on October 12th, which includes more than 200 new features such as iMessage, revamped notification system, PC Free, Wi-Fi Sync etc.
We take a look at the current state of jailbreaking to see if you should jailbreak your iOS device when iOS 5 is released.
Status Update:
Jailbreak Tools:
iPhone Dev Team and ih8sn0w have been releasing Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze for the beta versions of iOS 5 and recently released Redsn0w 0.9.9b3 for Windows and Mac and Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 8 for Windows that can jailbreak iOS 5 GM. Since iOS 5 Golden Master is the shipping version of the software, we expect them to be able to jailbreak iOS 5 that will be released on Wednesday.
iOS Devices Supported:
Both these tools support the following iOS 5 devices:
These tools cannot jailbreak iPad 2, which means that it also won’t be possible to jailbreak Apple’s new iPhone 4S as both are powered by Apple’s A5 chip.
Chronic Dev Team have apparently discovered 5 new userland exploits in iOS 5 for iPad 2 and potentially even iPhone 4S, so it remains to be seen when they will release greenpois0n for iOS 5 to jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
Untethered or Tethered:
Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze currently supports only a tethered jailbreak for all the iOS devices mentioned above, except for iPhone 3GS with the older bootrom.  With a tethered jailbreak you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot.
We hear that the Chronic Dev Team is working hard on an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. We’re also quite sure that iPhone Dev team is also working on it.
OTA Updates:
With iOS 5 users will be able to update the iOS software over the air. There have been some concerns raised whether this would have an impact on jailbreaking. iPhone Dev Team has clarified that OTA Updates should not affect jailbreaking. iPhone Dev Team has mentioned that by design, the OTA updates won’t be automatically applied to jailbroken devices, which means you won’t lose the jailbreak due to OTA updates. So if you’re jailbroken, you’ll need to use the standard iTunes method to update your iOS device to the latest iOS 5 software update.
Unlocking:
Redsn0w does not preserve the baseband, so if you depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone, you should not use Redsn0w. Sn0wbreeze for Windows currently allows you to preserve the baseband so you can install Ultrasn0w to unlock it. We expect iPhone Dev team to also release PwnageTool to preserve the baseband for Mac users.
However, it is important to note here that Ultrasn0w works  for basebands (01.59.00 / 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00) and there hasn’t much progress on the unlocking front for quite a while.
Compatible Jailbreak Apps and Tweaks:
BigBoss tell us that Apple has made a lot of internal changes in iOS 5, so jailbreak apps and tweaks need to be updated for them to work on iOS 5. Dev team’s had released Redsn0w for jailbreak app/tweak developers so that developers can update them for iOS 5. We’ve seen developers release popular apps such as biteSMS, MyWi, My3G, TruPrint, SBSettings released for iOS 5 but there still seem to be quite a few apps like Lockdown Pro that are not compatible with iOS 5. We hope to see an official list of iOS 5 compatible apps, which should make you decision a lot easier.
So should you upgrade and jailbreak iOS 5?
It really depends on you, here are some of the things you should consider before upgrading and jailbreaking iOS 5:
We hope this answers most of your questions about iOS 5 and jailbreaking. Please feel free to drop us a line in the comments if you’ve have other questions.

As expected, Apple has just released iOS 5Â Golden Master (build 9A334) to developers of iOS Developer program.
iOS 5 GM is available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPad and iPad 2.
The Golden Master version means that it is the shipping version of the software that developers must use to submit their iOS apps that are compatible with iOS 5.

Apple has also improved the Camera app, Photo app, mobile Safari browser, Mail and Calendar app in iOS 5.

Apple announced at the Let’s Talk iPhone event earlier today that iOS 5 and iCloud – Apple’s new cloud based service will be released on October 12th.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who earlier claimed that iPhone 5 will be similar to iPhone 4, has also informed AppleInsider that Apple will be releasing the golden master version of iOS 5 to manufacturing partners during the timeframe of September 23rd through 30th, suggesting that iPhone 5 will be available by mid-October.
AppleInsider reports:
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed to AppleInsider on Monday that the new iPhone and iPod touch went into mass production in late August, and assemblers are currently scheduled to receive the golden master of iOS 5 the week of September 30 [..]
[..] Upon receiving the software, Apple’s overseas assemblers will be able to install it on the finalized hardware and prepare it for shipping. The latest version of iOS will come preinstalled on both the fifth-generation models of the iPhone and iPod touch, set to be released in the coming weeks.
A release of iOS 5 to assemblers the week of Sept. 23 means its likely finalized hardware units for the new iPhone and iPod touch will begin to ship at the end of September. With an estimated 10 to 12 days for shipping, the two new devices are likely to be available by mid-October, Kuo said.Â
The Golden Master (GM) version means that it is the shipping version of the software that developers must use to develop and submit iOS apps that are compatible with iOS 5.
Apple has so far seeded seven beta version of iOS 5 to developers of iOS Developer program, the last one iOS 5 beta 7 was seeded on August 31st. The maximum number of beta versions that have been released for any major iOS version has been eight (for iPhone OS 2.0), so it is possible that Apple will release iOS 5 beta 8 this week and iOS 5 GM Â during the timeframe of September 23rd through 30th. Apple generally releases a major version of iOS, couple of days before the launch of the next generation iPhone or along with it, so looks like iOS 5 along with iCloud and iTunes Match will finally be available to users in the first half of October, almost a month from now.

iLounge reports that Apple has removed the ability to sync Nike+ workout data via iTunes in iOS 5 beta 6 that was seeded to developers few hours back.
iLounge reports that users are informed that they no longer need iTunes to sync their Nike+ workout data and can now send it directly using the “Send Workouts to Nike+†feature in the iOS device’s Nike + iPod settings on the iPhone.
Apple has removed the Nike + iPod synchronization tab for iOS 5 devices in iTunes 10.5.
iLounge reports:
With the release of iOS 5, Apple appears ready to end iTunes’ use as a middleman between iOS devices and nikeplus.com. According to an anonymous source, iOS 5 beta 6 devices with Nike+ data now prompt an iTunes dialog box stating that workout data can now be sent using the “Send Workouts to Nike+†feature in the iOS device’s Nike + iPod settings, and iTunes 10.5 no longer displays a Nike + iPod synchronization tab for iOS 5 devices.
iLounge points out that the ability to sync Nike+ workout data wirelessly to nikeplus.com was first introduced in iOS 4.1, but users still had the ability to sync the data the older way, which was via iTunes. Apple has removed this older option in iOS 5 beta 6.
So not a major change, but a step in the right direction by Apple to enforce iOS device users to use more convenient PC Free features with iOS 5.
