Encoding Video For Mobile Devices?

July 25th, 2010 07:13 admin No comments

MadGeek007 writes “I am developing at app for Android that will use many short (averaging 10-20 minutes) instructional videos. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about encoding video. I’d like to use a codec that is supported by Android and iOS out-of-the-box. I need the videos to look decent on large mobile displays (IPhone 4, HTC EVO, etc.), and still be able to stream well on a good 3G connection. The sound quality is also important. With so many different display resolutions on mobile devices, do I need to encode multiple copies of the same video? Or can I get away with a one-size-fits-all video? Can anyone recommend encoding software, codecs, resolutions, and bitrates that would work best for this application?”

What Gamers Have In Common With Top Athletes

June 8th, 2010 06:50 admin No comments

nk497 writes “It’s no surprise that professional gamers aren’t quite as fit as elite athletes, but they do have something in common. According to a British academic, top-level players show similar psychological attributes as top athletes, such as the ability to manage anxiety, and have reaction times on par with fighter pilots. Dr. Micklewright said, ‘When I first got asked to do [the study], my initial reaction was “don’t be ridiculous, gaming is nothing like sport.” But the more I thought about it, the more similarities [became clear], and I became more and more convinced that it was close in many ways to sport.’ While sitting in front of a screen might not have the same physical demands as running a marathon, neither do playing snooker or darts. Still, while gamers show good reflexes, their health was worse than expected, with one 20-something professional player showing the same aerobic health as a 60-year-old smoker.” This story is based on a BBC radio report which you can currently hear, although that link seems to say that it won’t last.

Is Cyberwarfare Fiction?

June 7th, 2010 06:52 admin No comments

An anonymous reader writes “In response to calls by Russia and the UN for a “cyberwarfare arms limitation treat”, this article explains ‘”Cyberwar” and “cyberweapons” are fiction. The conflicts between nation states in cyberspace are nothing like warfare, and the tools hackers use are nothing like weapons. Putting “cyber” in front a something is just way for people to grasp technical concepts, the analogies quickly break down, and are useless when taken too far (such as a “cyber disarmament treaty”).’”

Unless you live in a hatch somewhere, you are probably aware that Lost has ended. If you want a simple, clear explanation of exactly how the series resolved, Lost Untangled will do nothing to clarify things for you. For everyone else, I provide this discussion thread for you to complain/revel in the most spoiler-laden manner you desire.

Google Says It Mistakenly Collected Wi-Fi Data While Mapping

May 14th, 2010 05:08 admin No comments

Even if Google says there’s nothing to worry about, newviewmedia.com writes, the company “said it would stop collecting Wi-Fi network data from its StreetView cars, after an internal investigation it conducted found it was accidentally collecting data about websites people were visiting over the hotspots.
From the WSJ article: ‘It’s now clear that we have been mistakenly collecting samples of payload data from open [i.e. non-password-protected] Wi-Fi networks, even though we never used that data in any Google products.’”

Website Sells Pubic Lice

May 11th, 2010 05:23 admin No comments

A British website called crabrevenge.com will help you prove that there is literally nothing you can’t find online by selling you pubic lice. A disclaimer on the site says the creators “do not endorse giving people lice,” and the lice are for “novelty purposes only.” The company also boasts about a facility “where we do all of our parasite husbandry and carefully considered selective breeding.” Three different packages are available: “Green package – One colony that can lay as many as 30 eggs for about $20. Blue package – Three colonies to share with your friends or freeze a batch or two for about $35. Red package – A vial of ‘shampoo-resistant F-strain crabs’ which can take up to two weeks to kill for about $52.”

What Happens When IPv4 Address Space Is Gone

April 24th, 2010 04:37 admin No comments

darthcamaro writes ‘We all know that IPv4 address space is almost all gone — but how will we know when the exact date is? And what will happen that day? In a new report, ARIN‘s CIO explains exactly what will happen on that last day of IPv4 address availability: ‘”We will run out of IPv4 address space and the real difficult part is that there is no flag date. It’s a real moving date based on demand and the amount of address space we can reclaim from organizations,” Jimmerson told InternetNews.com. “If things continue they way they have, ARIN will for the very first time, sometime between the middle and end of next year, receive a request for IPv4 address space that is justified and meets the policy. However, ARIN won’t have the address space. So we’ll have to say no for the very first time.”‘

Microsoft Adopts SVG For Internet Explorer 9

March 26th, 2010 03:48 admin No comments

An anonymous reader writes SVG has been a published standard for almost a decade. Microsoft has had nothing to do with it, even while every other major browser adopted SVG as a supported format and interface. Just in the last few weeks, though, Microsoft has thrown a surprising amount of its weight behind SVG.” This means for IE 9, but it’s a start.
