An anonymous reader writes “The Droid X forums have posted a procedure to root the new Motorola Droid X, putting to rest Andoid fans’ fears that they would never gain access to the device’s secrets due to a reported eFuse that would brick the phone if certain boot files were tampered with. Rooting the phone is the first step in gaining complete control over the device.”

sylverboss writes with news that Nokia Siemens is buying Motorola’s wireless networks division for $1.2 billion. “The deal gives Nokia — the world’s leading supplier of mobile handsets — an invigorated entrance to the US market where it has lagged far behind other handset suppliers.” According to BusinessWeek, “Motorola’s sale of the wireless-network unit prepares it for a broader restructuring. The company is planning to spin off its mobile-phone and set-top box operations into a company that will be led by co-Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Jha. The spinoff is on schedule for the first quarter, Jha said last month.”

radicalpi writes “Motorola has responded to claims that eFuse is designed to brick your device if you attempt to mod it or install unauthorized bootloaders. Yes, the device will still not operate with unauthorized software, but it will only go into recovery mode until you reinstall the authorized software. According to Motorola: ‘If a device attempts to boot with unapproved software, it will go into recovery mode, and can re-boot once approved software is re-installed.’”

rocket97 writes “On Wednesday, at the Executives Club of Chicago, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha reportedly decided to chat about the relatively near future of the mobile landscape as he sees it — which, in part, includes the ultimate demise of mobile computers in favor of highly-capable smartphones. This being his vision, Jha discussed Motorola’s plans for a smartphone with a 2GHz processor — by the end of this year. While Jha did not want to divulge any further information, Conceivably Tech cites another anonymous Motorola executive who was a little more chatty, talking up a device intended to ‘incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today.’”

Hugh Pickens writes “The NY Times reports that Motorola plans to reorganize itself into two independent publicly held companies by the first quarter of 2011. The first company will own the Motorola brand and will include Motorola’s mobile handset unit and home set-top box business. This new company will focus on the ‘three screens’ lifestyle envisioned by carriers like AT&T and Verizon, where customers would watch content on TV, on their computers, and on their mobile phones. The other company emerging from the split will include Motorola’s wireless networking business and its enterprise radio systems operations. The wireless networking business would likely be sold off, leaving the second company with its profitable enterprise radio systems business, which generated $7 billion of the company’s $22 billion in sales in 2009.”

alphadogg writes “Patent litigation between Motorola and Research In Motion is heating up, with Motorola filing a complaint with the US International Trade Commission. In the complaint, Motorola alleges that RIM engages in unfair trade practices by importing and selling products that infringe five Motorola patents. The patents cover technologies related to Wi-Fi access, application management, user interface, and power management, Motorola said. Motorola is asking the ITC to investigate RIM and bar the company from importing, marketing, and selling products in the US that use the technologies.”
