iOS 5 Features: Improved FaceTime Video Quality; Enable FaceTime For iPhone 4 Users In Middle East

iOS 5

According to the folks at Apple-wd.com, Apple’s FaceTime video calling feature might be finally coming to iPhone 4 users in the Middle East countries.

Last October, when Apple launched iPhone 4 in UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, users were disappointed to find out that FaceTime – one of the major features was not supported.

It was widely speculated that Apple and Carriers in the Middle East countries decided to drop the feature as some of these countries have banned certain VoIP services in the past. The only way to enable the feature was to use jailbreak tweaks like FaceTime Activator and MiddleWhat that enable the feature in unsupported countries like UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc.

We’re not sure what has changed, but folks at Apple-wd.com have just confirmed that FaceTime works in iOS 5 beta, which is good news for iPhone 4 users. They’ve also published a screenshot:

That’s not the only FaceTime related change coming to iPhone 4. Apple has also revealed in one of the slides during the WWDC 2011 keynote address on Monday that iOS 5 will also bring improvements to video quality and iOS 5 beta has revealed that Apple will enable FaceTime over 3G for carriers that allow it.

Apple Bans iPhone Apps That Provide DUI Checkpoint Locations

iOS 5

Back in March, we reported that a group of US Senators have sent an email to Apple, requesting them to remove iPhone apps that provide DUI (Driving Under Influence) checkpoint (also called “sobriety roadblocksâ€) locations from the App Store.

Autoblog reports that Apple has updated its App Store Review Guidelines, which includes a section that bans apps that provide DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies.

Section 22.8 of the update App Store Review Guidelines states:

Apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected.

iPhone apps like Trapster alert users about speed traps, red light, speed cameras and other law enforcement checkpoints so that they can avoid them. The data on the live police traps comes from other tipsters (users) on the Trapster Network, which is frequently updated thanks to more than 11 million members. The DUI apps are quite popular on the App Store. When Trapster had launched the iPhone app more than two years back, they had tried to address concerns about the legality of their app:

“If you are concerned you should probably check the laws in your state or country, but our lawyers don’t think so. In fact, the police we’ve spoken with actually like the idea. It beeps, people slow down, they have met their objective, you save money on the ticket and insurance, and everyone is happy.”

But it looks like Apple didn’t buy their argument. Since apps like Trapster have thrived on crowd-sourcing the DUI information that is not published, so removing that part of the functionality to show only the DUI checkpoints that are published by the law enforcement agencies, would be pointless. It remains to be seen if such apps make their way to Cydia – the installer for jailbreak apps.

We’re quite sure that this will be a hotly debated topic. What’s your take?

Apple To Enable FaceTime Video Calls Over 3G In iOS 5

iOS 5

FaceTime – Apple’s video calling feature for iPhone 4 users is currently restricted to work only over Wi-Fi in iOS 4.x.x.

Steve Jobs had mentioned during his keynote address at WWDC 2010 that Apple is in talks with carriers to support the feature on 3G as well.

It looks like Apple has managed to finally convince some of the carriers as folks at 9to5Mac have just reported that it will be possible to make FaceTime video calls over 3G.

9to5Mac has received a screenshot, which indicates that Apple will enable this feature for carriers that allow it.

If the final version of iOS 5 includes this feature then it should also be available for iPad 2 3G users.

Jailbreak tweaks like My3G already allow iPhone 4 users to make FaceTime video calls over 3G and tweaks like FaceTime Activator and MiddleWhat that enable the feature in unsupported countries like UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc.

Strangely, while FaceTime has been restricted over Wi-Fi, Apple has approved apps like Fring that support video calling features such as four-way group video calls over 3G.

It will be interesting to see if FaceTime video calls over 3G will be enabled for AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 users. What do you think?

Untethered Jailbreak Exploit May Be Patched In iOS 5

PwnageTool

Yesterday, we reported that iOS 5 was successful jailbroken by the iPhone Dev Team less than 24 hours after it was released using the limera1n exploit.

But MuscleNerd had revealed that the jailbreak is currently tethered, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot.

iPhone hacking expert – Stefan Esser who is credited for the untethered jailbreak that is available for iOS 4.3.x via tools such as Redsn0w, PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze has revealed on Twitter that Apple might have fixed the exploit in iOS 5.

R.I.P. – I just heard Apple killed the ndrv_setspec() integeroverflow and his friends in iOS 5.0b1 – if this is true the untether is dead

Apple continues to make it more difficult to jailbreak iOS devices and stay ahead in the cat and mouse game so it is not surprising.

It’s still early days for a jailbreak solution for iOS 5, as Apple plans to release to the public later this fall.

Meanwhile, users are still waiting for a jailbreak for iPad 2, which was released few months back and a software method to unlock iPhone with the latest basebands.

As always, we’ll let you know if there are any further updates so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or  subscribe to our RSS feed.

Apple Releases iTunes 10.3.1, Probably To Fix Syncing Issue

June 8th, 2011 06:47 admin View Comments

iTunes 10.3

Apple has quietly released iTunes 10.3.1 earlier today, less than a day after it released iTunes 10.3.1, which brought features such as Automatic Downloads and Purchase history to PC and Mac, which are part of the iCloud’s iTunes in the Cloud feature. It also added Books to iTunes Store.

iTunes 10.3.1 is 75.8 MB in size for Mac OS X and 77 MB for Windows.

The support document for iTunes 10.3.1 does not provide any further details about what was fixed. It simply states the features that were introduced in iTunes 10.3.

According to MacRumors, some users were reporting an “unknown error (-50)” while trying to sync their iOS devices with iTunes 10.3. So it is quite possible that Apple released iTunes 10.3.1 to address the issue.

It’s still not available via Apple Software update, so you will need to head to the iTunes download page on Apple’s website to download it (link here). It is available for  Mac OS X 10.5 and higher and Windows (32-bit and 64 bit).

Let us know if you were facing the syncing issue after upgrading to iTunes 10.3, and more importantly if the issue is resolved after upgrading it to iTunes 10.3.1.

iOS 5

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team has just revealed that iOS 5 has been successfully jailbroken.

That was really quick. It has been less than 24 hours since Apple unveiled iOS 5 at yesterday’s WWDC 2011 Keynote and released iOS 5 beta to developers of iOS Developer program.

MuscleNerd revealed the news on Twitter:

iOS5 jailbroken on ipt4g: via limera1n + tethered boot..not too many surprises :)

yep Cydia works fine too from quick testing (I installed SSH)

He has also published few photos of the jailbroken iPod Touch on iOS 5:

iSSH app installed on jailbroken iPod Touch running iOS 5

Cydia running on iPod Touch 4G running iOS 5

When Apple unveiled iOS 5, which includes features such as over-the-air updates, there were some concerns about the future of jailbreaking. MuscleNerd has clarified that OTA should not be an issue putting those concerns to rest:

over-the-air delta updates of iOS should be fine for JBers (even if Apple didn’t let you disable them, the JB itself can)

As always, we’ll let you know as soon as there are any further updates, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.
