Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Way To Add Forums To a Website?

The Internet

First time accepted submitter DustyMurray writes “I am considering adding forums to my website, and am just getting confused by all the options. My first reaction is always DIY. You get better website integration, and it looks and feels 100% how you want it to look and feel. However looking at things like phpBB and Vanilla forums, I will be hard pressed to build a better user experience in a reasonable amount of time. Also these out-of-the-box solutions seem to be shouting ‘Easy to integrate with your website.’ So, considering this, how easy are these ready build forums really to integrate? I want to be able to insert stuff on certain pages, so it’s not either the forums, or my site… It must be a mix. I do not want a second login system on my site. And last but not least, I definitely don’t want to have this typical generic look that most forums sport. Can all that be delivered with the out-of-the-box forums that exist today? Which one is the most flexible regarding these wishes.”

Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Way To Become a Rural ISP?

The Internet

hawkeyeMI writes “I live in a small, rural town nestled in some low hills. Our town has access to only one DSL provider, and it’s pretty terrible. However, a regional fiber project is just being completed, and some of the fiber is in fact running directly past my house. Currently, there are no last-mile providers in my area, and the regional project only considers itself a middle-mile provider, and will only provide service to last-mile providers. Assuming this will not be my day job, that the local populace is rather poor, and that because of the hills, line-of-sight service will be difficult, how could I set myself up as an ISP? I have considered WiFi mesh networking, and even running wires on the power/telephone polls, but the required licensing and other issues are foreign to me. What would you do?”

coondoggie writes “It’s not clear if the Federal Trade Commission is throwing up its hands at the problem or just wants some new ideas about how to combat it, but the agency is now offering $50,000 to anyone who can create what it calls an innovative way to block illegal commercial robocalls on landlines and mobile phones.”

Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Jump Back Into Programming?

Programming

First time accepted submitter FractalFear writes “15 years ago I was programming in BASIC, and doing some C++, after a serious car accident barely making it out alive, my memory went to crud. I have no recolection of how to do anything in either of those languages any more. I’ve suffered some damage, and my memory isn’t all that great. However if I do repetitive work it sticks to me. I’ve been in IT for 17 years as desktop support, and I fear I won’t ever get much further in life due to my handicap. I am hard working and dedicated, I have been reading slashdot regularly for many years now, and I have faith in the Slashdot community advice. I recently bought Head First C#: 2nd Edition(A friend of mine that programs for a living suggested C# as an easier alternative to C++) the first 4 chapters were great, but after that everything just didn’t make any sense. My question(s) to you guys is: What was the best way for you to get back into programming? School? Self taught? And what would be the best language for someone like me to get into? My goal is to make games as a hobby for now, but would like to enter into the market of XBOX Arcade, Steam, mobile etc, particularly 2D TBSRPG games like Shining Force. If you prefer self taught what are some really good books you suggest?”

Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Take Notes In the Modern Classroom?

Education

Krau Ming writes “After about eight years spent in research, I’ve made the decision to go back to school — medical school. When I last spent the bulk of my days sitting in lectures, I took notes with paper, and if the professor wasn’t technologically impaired, he/she would have posted powerpoint slides as a PDF online for us to print and make our notes on. Since it has been so long, I am looking for some options other than the ol’ pen and paper. Is there an effective way of taking notes with a laptop? What about tablet options? Are there note-taking programs that can handle a variety of file types (eg: electronic textbooks, powerpoint slides, PDFs)? Or should I just sleep in and get the lectures posted online and delay learning the course material until the exam (kidding)?”

Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Monitor Traffic?

The Internet

First time accepted submitter Shalmendo writes “My client needs to monitor traffic on his LAN, particularly going out to the internet. This will include websites like Facebook, Myspace, and similar, including from mobile devices. So far, based on the network education I have, I’ve concluded that it might be best to get a tap (And some kind of recording system with wireshark, probably a mini-barebone), or replace the existing Linksys router with a custom built mini barebone system with linux routing software and appropriate storage capacity etc to record traffic internally. (either way it looks like I will need to put together a mini barebone system for some purpose) My client is trying to protect his family from scammers and other unsavory types, and isn’t savvy in this matter, so i’m doing it for him. What I need is a way to record the traffic at a singular point, like modem/router areas, or similar, and a way to scrape out Facebook, Myspace, and other messages. It also appears that the client’s family is using iPhones and some game called ‘words’ which has message capability. Is it possible to scrape messages out of that game’s packets, or are they obfuscated? Can I write a script? What software would you recommend? Linux routing OS? Can we sniff packets and drop them on the internal hard drive? or would a tap be better? How do I analyze and sort the data afterwards? my client needs easily read evidence (Such as text or screenshots) he can use as proof in discussion with his family to try and intercede in any potentially harmful transactions. In other words, how can I Achieve this goal? I have basic and medium training in computer networking, so I can make my own cables and such, but I’ve never worked on this exact kind of project before, and thought it might be better to query slashdot instead of do my own research from scratch. After days of discussion with the client, it’s not plausible to put monitoring software in the devices on the network (due to legal issues and a few other factors), so I concluded a network tap or other device would be the best way to capture and study what’s going on.”

Ask Slashdot: What’s the Best Way To Deal With Roving TSA Teams?

Government

An anonymous reader writes “I live in Boston, and I have noticed the TSA performs random security checks at the Copley T (subway station) and other locations. I routinely travel with a laptop, iPhone, and other gadgetry. What are my rights when asked by one of the TSA agents to ‘come over here’? Can I say no and proceed with my private business? What if a police officer says that I ‘must go over there and cooperate’? Can I decline or ask for a warrant? Like the majority of the population, I turn into an absolute shrinking violet when pressured by intimidating authority, but I struggle with what I see to be blatant social devolution. Has anybody out there actually responded rationally, without complying? What were your experiences?”

Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Print From an Android Tablet?

Android

KowboyKrash writes “Does any Slashdotter know how to print from an Android tablet? I have read about Google Cloud Print, but will it work from all (or at least most) apps? Is there a better solution? A little background: With my laptop being four years old, and the battery failing, I want to replace it with a device with 10 hours of battery. I am purchasing an Asus Transformer Prime after Christmas as a gift to myself; my plan is to replace my laptop completely for portable computing. I’ve already selected several apps that should meet my needs, including Polaris Office, and TeamViewer to remotely access my desktop. So are there any printing solutions for Android? Printing to my network printer at home is good enough.”

Hardware

First time accepted submitter THE_WELL_HUNG_OYSTER writes “I have 10-15 old hard drives I want to trash, some IDE and some SATA. Even if I still had IDE hardware, I don’t want to wait several weeks to run DBAN on all of them. I could use a degausser, but they are prohibitively expensive. I could send them to a data destruction firm, but can they be trusted? What’s the fastest, cheapest DIY solution?”

Ask Slashdot: Best Way To Learn About Game Theory and AI?

AI

xmojox writes “I would like to learn more about Artificial Intelligence and Game Theory. I know these are both large areas of study; however, my main interest is in how these affect decisions in the world. This would include politicians, business people, and general society. I’m not looking for a career or anything; this is just a personal interest of mine. Where are good places to start in these areas for somebody new to them? I’m aware of the Stanford on-line classes, but those don’t work with my current schedule.”
