Ultrasn0w

MuscleNerd, member of the iPhone Dev team has just announced that they will release Ultrasn0w for iOS 5 after an update for MobileSubstrate is released tomorrow.

Dev team has already released Redsn0w for iOS 5 for Mac, which includes the PwnageTool functionality and iH8sn0w had released Snowbreeze for Windows that allows users to preserve iPhone’s baseband while upgrading to iOS 5.

MuscleNerd tweeted few minutes back:

will coordinate ultrasn0w iOS5 compatibility update to come out *after* a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow

Please note that we’re assuming that Dev team will release it as soon as MobileSubstrate is released, but it is possible that it is released a little later.

Ultrasn0w currently supports the following basebands  01.59.00 (iPhone 4), baseband 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00 (iPhone 3GS). We don’t expect it to support latest basebands such as 04.11.08 (iPhone 4) or baseband 05.16.05 (iPhone 3GS) that comes bundled with iOS 5 that was released yesterday. Note: You can find your iPhone’s baseband by going to Settings –> About –> Modem Firmware

So Ultrasn0w for iOS 5 will be useful only for users who have iPhones with the older basebands mentioned above, unless Dev team has a surprise for us.

Apple To Start Production Of iPhone 5 In Q3; To Feature 8-Megapixel Camera, Dual-Mode GSM-CDMA Qualcomm Chip

iPhone 5

PCWorld reports that according FBR Capital Markets – a financial analyst firm, Apple will start manufacturing iPhone 5 in the third quarter, indicating that it will be launched later this year instead of unveiling it at next month’s WWDC 2011. They’re also claiming that the next generation iPhone will feature a 8-megapixel camera and baseband chip from Qualcomm that will work on both GSM and CDMA networks. PCWorld reports:

The iPhone 5 will include an 8-megapixel camera and a single baseband chip that will work on both GSM and CDMA networks, FBR Capital Markets said in a research note, citing information from industry contacts. [..]

[..] “Our contacts have confirmed to us that Qualcomm is replacing Intel as the baseband supplier, selling an integrated CDMA/WCDMA baseband,” FBR wrote in the research note.

It makes sense for Apple to move to a single baseband chip solution that works on both GSM and CDMA networks so that it does not have to make different iPhone models. Back in April, Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst at Concord Securities who has a good track in predicting Apple product related news had also claimed that production of iPhone 5 will start only in September based on information obtained from Apple’s supply chain. It is also speculated that Sony will supply camera sensors for the fifth generation iPhone based on comments made by Sony CEO Howard Stringer. But according to FBR, Omnivision that supplies camera sensors for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G and iPad 2 will be supplying the 8-megapixel CMOS sensor for iPhone 5 with Sony as the backup sensor supplier. Are you waiting for Apple to launch iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S? Let us know in the comments section below.

NVIDIA Buys Baseband And RF Technology Company Icera For $367M In Cash

May 9th, 2011 05:34 admin View Comments

NVIDIA this morning announced its acquisition of Icera, which provides baseband processors for 3G and 4G cellular phones and tablets.

The acquisition, for $367 million in cash, has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors and is expected to be completed, subject to customary closing conditions, in approximately 30 days.

Icera holds more than 550 patents, and its high speed wireless-modem products have been approved by more than 50 carriers across the globe. Founded in 2002 and based in Bristol, England, the company has approximately 300 employees in seven countries in Europe and Asia, as well as the United States.

By combining the companies’ products and technologies, including its Tegra processor, NVIDIA aims to solidify its position in the growing mobile market:

By offering the two main processors used in smartphones (the application processor and baseband processor), the combined company will help OEM customers both improve their time to market and deliver the requirements of next-generation mobile computing. NVIDIA will also have approximately doubled its revenue opportunity within each device.

Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA, says the company intends to continue to collaborate with its existing baseband partners and “respect its customers’ preferences” in combining application and baseband processors.

Sn0wbreeze 2.7: Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.3 And iOS 4.2.8 For Windows Released

May 6th, 2011 05:41 admin View Comments

Sn0wbreeze v2.5.1

iH8sn0w has just released Sn0wbreeze 2.7 for Windows, which allows users who want to jailbreak and also unlock their GSM iPhone to update their iPhone with a pre-jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 firmware while preserving the baseband from getting upgraded so that it can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w. Sn0wbreeze 2.7 also supports iOS 4.2.8 for Verizon iPhone.

Sn0wbreeze is considered the unofficial PwnageTool for Windows. iPhone Dev Team has also released PwnageTool for Mac users sometime back.

It allows users to create custom iOS 4.3.3 or iOS 4.2.8 firmware file that is pre-jailbroken, which can be used to upgrade their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iOS 4.3.3 or Verizon iPhone to iOS 4.2.8.

In case of iPhone, it also preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that it can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w.

ih8sn0w has provided the following details in the release notes:

  • Now Supports iOS 4.3.3 [untethered] (except iPad 2)
  • Now Supports iOS 4.2.8 [untethered] (Verizon iPhone 4 users)
  • Multitasking Gestures are enabled in the Settings app as usual
  • ultrasn0w works with previous working baseband thanks to today’s update
  • Verizon iPhone 4 basebands now get updated [GSM versions not affected]
  • Animated boot logos work as usual.

Sn0wbreeze 2.7 supports an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2 and supports the following devices:

Sn0wbreeze 2.7 doesn’t support iPad 2. Sn0wbreeze 2.7 also allows users to enable four and five finger multitouch gestures, which are only available to developers of iOS developer program.

Please note that the ultrasn0w fix currently supports iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00.

iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone users who don’t care about unlocking are better off using Redsn0w as one doesn’t need to preserve baseband like iPhone users.

You can download Sn0wbreeze 2.7 from iH8sn0w’s website.

As always, please let us know how it goes.

PwnageTool 4.3.3, Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 And Ultrasn0w 1.2.3 Released For iOS 4.3.3

Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS

iPhone Dev team has just released PwnageTool 4.3.3 and Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 for iOS 4.3.3 that incorporates the untether jailbreak developed by iPhone hacking expert Stefan Esser.

PwnageTool 4.3.3 will allow iPhone users to safely restore to a pre-jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 firmware and retain their current baseband so that they can use Ultrasn0w to unlock their GSM iPhone, which is only useful for users with older baseband.

Dev Team has provided the following information on their blog:

… three in a row!  Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, and once again the untethered jailbreak exploit that@i0n1c created for 4.3.1 still works.  That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works.  We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!

Today’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!).  It also of course uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak.

Some things to note:

  1. ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w!  Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband.
  2. ultrasn0w has been updated to v1.2.3 to be compatible with iOS 4.3.3 and earlier (the ultrasn0w update does not include any new baseband support!). Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off†swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.3.
  3. By popular demand, redsn0w now allows you to enable multitasking gestures (although most will find it useful only on iPads).

PwnageTool 4.3.3 and Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 supports the following iOS devices for iOS 4.3.3:
