An anonymous reader writes “‘Always bet on Duke.’ It seems he was right about himself, at least. The longest, most storied in-development game in history seems like it’s finally going to be released by Gearbox Software sometime within the next year. ‘According to Pitchford, Gearbox began finishing Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009. “Clearly the game hadn’t been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created,” he says. “The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn’t quite make it, and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It’s the game it was meant to be.” The game is currently expected to ship in 2010 although given its history Pitchford is understandably reluctant to be more specific.’”

An anonymous reader writes “It appears that Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader Sarah Jones and her lawyer were so upset by a comment on the site TheDirty.com that they missed the ‘y’ at the end of the name. Instead, they sued the owner of TheDirt.com, whose owner didn’t respond to the lawsuit. The end result was a judge awarding $11 million, in part because of the failure to respond. Now, both the owners of TheDirty.com and TheDirt.com are complaining that they’re being wrongfully written about in the press — one for not having had any content about Sarah Jones but being told it needs to pay $11 million, and the other for having the content and having the press say it lost a lawsuit, even though no lawsuit was ever actually filed against it.”

An anonymous reader writes “The manifesto of the man holding the Discovery Channel hostage with a bomb has been released. He has fired shots and taken hostages. His main complaints are about overpopulation, religion and civilization. He wants them to avoid encouraging people to produce more ‘disgusting human babies,’ to get people to accept ‘Malthus-Darwin science,’ reject civilization and its ‘disgusting religious-cultural roots,’ and to stop ‘ALL immigration pollution.’” The man has now been shot by police, and the hostages have been freed.

An anonymous reader writes “The US press has been pushing for a (much needed) federal shield law, that would allow reporters to protect their sources. It’s been something of a political struggle for a few years now, and things were getting close when Wikileaks suddenly got a bunch of attention for leaking all those Afghan war documents. Suddenly, the politicians involved started working on an amendment that would specifically carve out an exception for Wikileaks so that it would not be covered by such a shield law. And, now, The First Amendment Center is condemning the newspaper industry for throwing Wikileaks under the bus, as many in the industry are supporting this new amendment, and saying that Wikileaks doesn’t deserve source protection because ‘it’s not journalism.’”

An anonymous reader writes “The has been a lot of buzz in the industry lately about NoSQL databases helping Twitter, Amazon, and Digg scale their transactional workloads. But there has been some recent pushback from database luminaries such as Michael Stonebraker. Now, a couple of researchers at Yale University claim that NoSQL is no longer necessary now that they have scaled traditional ACID compliant database systems.”

An anonymous reader writes “You would think that shutting down software could be fairly simple from an end user’s view. If I ask you to shut it down, would you mind shutting it actually down, please? well, it’s a bit more complicated than that, because you need to ask the user if they really want to shut down and if unsaved documents should be saved. And that warrants a patent that, also covers Mac OS X. Next time you shut down Windows, remember how complicated it is for Windows to shut down. Perhaps that is the reason why this procedure can take minutes in some cases.”

An anonymous reader noted that the SCO Group is having a
bankruptcy auction in October. The article says ‘After bankruptcy in September 2007, SCO and an affiliate filed schedules listing combined assets of $14.2 million and debt totaling $5.2 million.’ I wonder if we could all chip in and buy something as a sort of ‘Thanks for being a pimple on the face of humanity’ present.

An anonymous reader writes “Responses to a survey from attendees of the DEFCON 18 conference revealed that 73% came across a misconfigured network more than three quarters of the time – which, according to 76% of the sample, was the easiest IT resource to exploit. Results revealed that 18% of professionals believe misconfigured networks are the result of insufficient time or money for audits. 14% felt that compliance audits that don’t always capture security best practices are a factor and 11% felt that threat vectors that change faster than they can be addressed play a key role.”

An anonymous reader writes “Ksplice, the technology that allows Linux kernel updates without a reboot, is now free for users of the Fedora distribution. Using Ksplice is like ‘replacing your car’s engine while speeding down the highway,’ and it can potentially save your Linux systems from a lot of downtime. Since Fedora users often live on the bleeding edge of Linux development, Ksplice makes it even easier to do so, and without reboots!”

An anonymous reader writes “Engadget has photos of ‘Pionen White Mountains, the nuclear bunker in which Wikileaks will locate some of its servers. It was excavated 98 feet underground, in a rock hill in the center of Stockholm, Sweden, during the Cold War.’ It looks like they hired the same interior designer who decorated Batman’s lair.”
