Untrackerd: Jailbreak Tweak Resolves iPhone Tracking Issue
Security researchers had revealed yesterday that iPhone and iPad 3G regularly tracks the location of your iOS device and records the co-ordinates along with timestamp in a hidden file.
If you are concerned that this is happening without your consent then there is a jailbreak tweak that cleans up the hidden file on a regular basis.
Ryan Petrich who has developed many jailbreak apps such as ProSwitcher, DisplayOut, Rotation Inhibitor, etc. has quickly developed a jailbreak tweak called Untrackerd that addresses the iPhone tracking issue that has raised privacy concerns:
Continuously clean up locationd’s history data in the background. This package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean the consolidated.db file
You can install Untrackerd on your jailbroken iPhone using the Cydia app.
John Gruber of Daring Fireball reports that according to his source the issue is a bug:
consolidated.db acts as a cache for location data, and that historical data should be getting culled but isn’t, either due to a bug or, more likely, an oversight. I.e. someone wrote the code to cache location data but never wrote code to cull non-recent entries from the cache, so that a database that’s meant to serve as a cache of your recent location data is instead a persistent log of your location history. I’d wager this gets fixed in the next iOS update.
So it looks like Apple will release an iOS software update (iOS 4.3.3) as it has already received a lot of negative publicity.
