Twitter iPhone app

Twitter released a new version of their iPhone and iPad app (version 3.3) earlier in the week.

One of the new features introduced in the new version is Quick Bar (iPhone only), which floats at the top of the Twitter timeline and displays the latest trends, including promoted trends. Some users are quite annoyed with this change and are calling it the DickBar, referring to Twitter’s CEO DIck Costola.

Let us checkout the list of new features in version 3.3 of one of favorite iPhone apps, before we go into the details of the DickBar controversy and how to remove it if you find it annoying:

- Quick Bar, shows trends and other important things without leaving your timeline! Swipe the Quick Bar left/right to cycle through trends

- Trends based on your location

- Cleaner, redesigned Tweet compose screen.

- Automatically shortens URLs. Just paste them in and they will only count as 20 characters, no matter how long they are!

- Autocomplete @usernames and hashtags

- Easier photo uploading

- Find friends using your phone’s contacts

- Improved DM conversation view, now works similar to SMS/Chat

- Cleaned up preferences

- Bug fixes

As mentioned earlier, some users are quite annoyed with this change and are calling it the DickBar, referring to Twitter’s CEO DIck Costola. It also has its own hasktag (#dickbar).

Since Twitter hasn’t provided an option to disable the QuickBar, which seems like an obvious design choice while rolling out such as major change, we think its a business decision by Twitter.

Twitter’s Sean Garret has tweeted:

Twitter submitted an update to Apple yesterday for our iPhone app. It fixes some bugs & makes it so the quickbar doesn’t overlay on Tweets

It needs to be seen if users will be happy if the Quick Bar doesn’t overlay on Tweets as users want an option to disable it.

If you’ve a jailbroken iPhone and don’t like the Quick Bar then chpwn has released a tweak called Twizzler on Cydia, which removes the Quick Bar from version 3.3.

You can download the latest version of Twitter for iPhone using the iTunes link. Check it out yourself and tell us what you think in the comments.
