Verizon iPhone Carrier Settings Update: Should You Update Them?
Quite a few Verizon iPhone users are reporting on Twitter and Verizon forums that they’ve received dialog box prompting them to update Carrier Settings.
If you’re one of them and wondering if you should update or ignore it, since it is the first time you’ve seen such a message then here is some information that will help.
According to Apple’s Knowledge Base article the carrier settings update includes:
Carrier settings updates are small files (about 10k) that are downloaded from iTunes to be installed on your iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi + 3G. The carrier settings can include updates to the default APN (how the device accesses the carrier’s cellular data network). The carrier settings for iPhone also include special dialing codes at Settings > Phone > [Carrier] Services, default settings for Stocks, Maps, Weather, and other items. You should install the latest carrier settings updates for your device as soon as they are available.
One of the contributors on Verizon forums provides some more details about the update (though it is difficult to confirm it):
“All it does is change how the phone behaves regarding data roaming: before the update, with data roaming off you only get data on the VzW network. After the update, you can also get data on their partner networks (you can roam on Sprint, US Cellular, ACS, etc, etc at no charge as part of your VzW service) with the data roaming setting turned off. That’s the only thing it changes. If you’re not in one of the “extended network†areas, it won’t affect you and is not worth worrying about.â€
Users haven’t reported any issue updating the Carrier Settings so it should be safe to update it.
