Rumor: Apple Cancels AirPrint Feature To Print Via Shared Printers On Macs and PCs

If AirPrint was the functionality you were most looking forward to using on iOS 4.2, be prepared to be a little disappointed. According to folks over at MacStories, Apple has removed (or has postponed) AirPrint feature to print to shared printers connected to Macs and PCs.

AirPrint is Apple’s wireless printing technology that automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software.

MacStories reports;

We have been told from a few Mac developers that a few days ago Apple removed all the references to printing via OS X 10.6.5 and PCs both from Readme files and other online documentation posted in the iOS developer center. It seems like all that’s now mentioned in the release notes are the aforementioned HP networked printers, as if the shared printing option never existed.

Apparently, Apple has decided to ditch the feature due to the instability and incompatibility related issues.

If you are well versed with the way Apple functions, you might also know that they would rather postpone a buggy feature than go ahead with it and give users a chance to complain.

When contacted by a developer, an Apple tech support representative sort of confirmed the news with his reply which read:

Support for AirPrint on Windows and Mac has been canceled. We will be in contact with you if another opportunity arises in the future.

MacStories also reports that Steve Jobs has replied to a disappointed user saying that AirPrint support has not been removed:

Q: As a release-day purchaser of an iPad, I was elated when you revealed iOS 4.2 would support AirPrint. Now comes reports AirPrint support has been pulled from 4.2. Between announcements/assurances of the white iPhone, and now the pulling of AirPrint, is Apple going to lose credibility and become known for announcing “vaporware”?

A: AirPrint has not been pulled. Don’t believe everything you read.

However, Steve Jobs response does not clarify whether Apple has removed the AirPrint feature to print via shared printers on Macs and PCs.

To avoid any confusion, please note that iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users will be able to print documents wirelessly to compatible printers. Developers have also confirmed that it works on iDevices running iOS 4.2 Golden Master. It’s the AirPrint feature to print via shared printers on Macs and PCs that is currently doubtful.

Were you looking forward to this feature? Let us know in the comments section below.
