Sprint CEO Attributes Increase In 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot Sales To Apple’s iPad
In an interview with GigaOM, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse revealed that Sprint is benefiting from the high demand of Apple's iPad even though they're not selling it in their retail stores like AT&T and Verizon.
According to Hesse, most people buy the Wi-Fi only model of the iPad and use devices like Sprint's Overdrive 3G/4G mobile hotspot for on-the-go connectivity.
Sprint was quick to identify the opportunity and had started offering a "4G case" for the iPad as soon it was available. The case holds a user's iPad, as well as Sprint's 3G/4G Overdrive mobile hotspot.
Sprint has seen considerable increase in sales of the mobile hotspots since the launch of the iPad earlier this year.
Sprint will face stiff competition in this space from Verizon as it has also started offering the MiFi mobile hotspot device with the iPad and giving more than 50% discount on it.
Back in March, a Sprint advertisement had claimed that it could turn the iPhone into a 4G phone with the Overdrive 4G Wireless hotspot.
When GigaOm asked Hesse about the possibility of offering the CDMA iPhone, Hesse declined to comment.
