Apple quarterly reports

Apple has overtaken Research In Motion to become the world's fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer. This finding has been reported by IDC in its latest Mobile Phone Tracker Report where the research firm has noted that Apple registered a record sale of 14.1 million units worldwide during the study period.

This puts Apple just behind Nokia, Samsung and LG Electronics. Significantly, Sony Ericsson failed to secure a place in the top five for the first time since IDC started reporting its findings in 2004.

The quarter ending September 2010 has also been eventful for Apple as far as its earnings are concerned. After the company pipped Microsoft in terms of market capitalization to become the second largest company in the United States back in May this year, it has now been revealed that Apple has also overtaken Microsoft in terms of revenues earned. Microsoft reported revenues of $16.20 billion in Q3 2010 that is significantly lower than the $20.34 billion that Apple reported for the same period. Microsoft however continues to enjoy larger profits owing to the fact that a significant chunk of its revenues come from the sale of software.

It is interesting to note that these reports are for the three months post the launch of iPhone 4. The launch saw a lot of controversy after several media reports complained about problems with the new iPhone's antenna. These reports forced Apple to announce free bumper cases to all of their customers. However, the successful performance of Apple in terms of revenues as well as volumes sold is perhaps an indicator of the fact that the controversies did not have any significant fallout on Apple's brand perception among its customers.

The reports also highlight the increasing popularity of the Apple brand worldwide. The iPhone 4 launched in 17 new countries in the past quarter and the reported volumes of handsets sold is testament to Apple's success in these new markets. With rumors of Apple launching a CDMA iPhone doing the rounds, do you think Apple will be able to carry on with its successful growth?  Tell us in the comments below.
