Google announced today that it will soon add editing capabilities for Google Docs for iPad users at the "Google Atmosphere" conference, Google’s annual European event dedicated to cloud computing.

Currently, the mobile version of Google Docs shows a read-only view of your document. So by offering Google Docs on the iPad, Google will be able to compete with Apple’s popular iWorks suite of apps for the iPad and other third party apps such as Documents to Go and Quickoffice that have been offering this capability for quite sometime now.

Google Enterprise President Dave Girouard wrote in a blog post on the Official Google Blog:

“…we demonstrated new mobile editing capabilities for Google Docs on the Android platform and the iPad. In the next few weeks, co-workers around the world will soon be able to co-edit files simultaneously from an even wider array of devices.

Only cloud computing is able to deliver the whole package of productivity-enhancing collaboration, superior reliability and virtually unlimited scale at a price that's affordable for any size organization. Our Atmosphere event is a nice opportunity to step back and fully appreciate the power of the cloud with customers and future customers alike.”

But since Google Docs will be free, it could still emerge as the winner even though it has taken so much time to introduce the feature.

We’ll let you know as soon as Google adds the editing capabilities for Google Docs. It will be interesting to see if it works well on the iPhone and iPod Touch as well.

Will you start using Google Docs or will you still prefer to use Apple’s iWork suite of apps or one of the other third party iOS apps? Let us know in the comments.
