iOS 4.1

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos is one of the major new features introduced in iOS 4.1. But looks like it will be available only to iPhone 4 users and won’t be available to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users.

At Apple’s September 1 special event, Steve Jobs explained that HDR photos are created using 3 photos taken in rapid succession: one normal, one under-exposed, and one over-exposed. The photos are then combined using some pretty sophisticated algorithms to create an enhanced composite photo.

The webpage that describes the new features in iOS 4.1 software update on Apple’s website states that the HDR photography feature will be available on the iPhone. It does not mention the availability of the feature on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

TiPB speculates that one of the reasons for not bringing the feature to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users could be due to the slower processor and lower 256MB RAM. iPhone 4 comes with Apple’s A4 processor and 512MB RAM.

However, there is a glimmer of hope for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users as cdevwill has announced that he will be releasing a hack that will enable the feature for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. It goes without saying that it will be possible to enable it only if you have jailbroken your iPhone.

Users can also download apps like Pro HDR (iTunes link to HDR related apps) that have been available on the App Store for quite sometime that bring this functionality to the iPhone.

As reported earlier, according to Apple’s UK and Spanish site iOS 4.1 is scheduled to be released tomorrow, September 8 (though Apple has updated their International websites to say that iOS 4.1 will be coming soon just like the US site).

In addition to the HDR feature, iOS 4.1 also includes feature such as HD video upload, ability to buy TV show rentals and Game Center, Apple’s social gaming network and also the fix for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth and iPhone 3G performance problems

Are you disappointed that the feature is not coming to the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G? Or are you still looking forward to the iOS 4.1 software update?
