New Apple TV

AppleInsider claims that according to their ‘source familiar with the matter’, Apple is testing iOS 4.1 that has been seeded to developers of iPhone developer program on three new devices.

AppleInsider reports that the new "Configuration Descriptors" within iOS 4’s USB configuration files has revealed devices with model numbers “iPod 4,1”, "iProd 2,1" and a mystery device with model number '’UnknownHardware”.

AppleInsider speculates:

“The first product, a fourth-generation iPod touch, is referenced within the code as "iPod 4,1."[..]

The second unreleased product referenced in the USB configuration files is "iProd 2,1."[..]

Finally, and most intriguing, is a previously undiscovered mention of a mysterious device listed only as "unknownHardware. Although the configuration files tag this device with a unique Apple product ID of 20547, it's textual descriptor is similarly listed as "Unknown- Add device descriptor info for this device."

As we have explained before, Apple uses these models numbers to distinguish between different hardware models.

For example: The original iPhone carries the model number of "iPhone 1,1", while the iPhone 3G is labeled "iPhone 1,2", iPhone 3GS is labeled "iPhone 2,1" and the model number of iPhone 4 is "iPhone 3,1".

In case of the iPad, iProd1,1 was the original reference. But the reference of the production model is iPad1,1.

These numbers do not change for simple storage increases and instead represent functionally different devices.

Based on this, “iPod 4,1” seems to be the fourth generation iPod Touch, which is expected to be unveiled at a special event in September.

“iProd 2.1” could be the model number of the next generation iPad – iPad 2G, which we hear could come with a processor based on ARM's Cortex-A9 design, instead of the current Apple A4 chip leveraging the Cortex-A8 design and 512MB RAM like iPhone 4.

The mystery device with placeholder “UnknownHardware” could be for the next generation Apple TV, which we had recently report might be renamed iTV.

We can’t wait for the media event next month. How about you folks?
