CDMA iPhone launching in Q4

CDMA iPhone rumors are back. Apple may be launching a CDMA version of iPhone 4 in the fourth quarter of this year according to a fresh report.

Taiwanese website, Digitimes, claims that Pegatron Technology – the manufacturing arm of Asustek, has started the production of the new CDMA iPhone at its plant in Shanghai.

This follows reports from the same publication last month where it was claimed that Apple had contracted the Taiwanese company for the manufacture of the rumored CDMA iPhones. The report had stated that Pegatron will be manufacturing 10 million CDMA iPhones annually

However, the earlier report from DigiTimes had indicated that the production of the new CDMA iPhones was scheduled for September of this year. This was also confirmed last month by DigiTimes Senior analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who revealed that Pegatron Technology was currently in the Engineer Verification Test (EVT) phase of the iPhone manufacturing process. Considering that there were at least a couple of more phases to go before mass production could begin, the shipment of the new CDMA iPhone was expected to happen only in 2011.

Nevertheless, a Q4 launch makes strategic sense for Apple as the company gears itself up for competition from a slew of new Android handsets that are expected to launch during the holiday shopping season this year. Verizon had an extremely successful holiday season last year when the company launched Motorola Droid. There are already speculations that the CDMA carrier may launch a newer version of their Droid smartphone this year. By launching a CDMA iPhone during the same period, Apple may expect to post a significant challenge to the success of these new Android devices.

It should be noted that these are still speculations at this point and need to be taken with a grain of salt. Steve Jobs did not mention the rumored CDMA iPhone during his keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference this year. Will Apple launch a CDMA iPhone after labeling  'CDMA' as a dead technology remains to be seen.
