The 2010 edition of the FIFA World Cup is finally underway in South Africa. The next one month will see 32 teams battle it out for the much coveted championship.

While there is nothing that can substitute live action on TV, there are some cool iPhone apps that will keep you updated on the event besides letting you test your soccer knowledge. Here are five iPhone applications that we think are must-haves for every soccer fan during the next 30 days.

ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup [iTunes Link]

This iPhone app is a great handbook that will offer a quick reference to the live scores, tournament schedule, hosting venue details and player profiles. You can also personalize the application by selecting your favorite team and track their movement as the tournament progresses. The iPhone app is free to download. However, you can also access premium features like live ESPN radio streams, video highlights, live commentary and studio analysis for an additional $7.99 (which we thought was quite expensive).

World Cup Trivia Challenge [iTunes Link]

Do you love soccer trivia? This is a great app to challenge your soccer knowledge by pitting yourself against an opponent. Players will have to answer as many questions as possible in the space of a few minutes and score a goal for three correct answers, for every wrong answer your opponent gets a point (opponent doesn't actually answer any questions). This is a wonderful app for you to play this soccer season. The iPhone app retails at $1.99 though it is available for $0.99 for a limited period.
