AT&T Moves Up iPhone Upgrade Eligibility; New iPhone Launch Imminent
Several iPhone users have been noticing recent changes to the iPhone upgrade eligibility status on their AT&T account.
MacRumors points out that iPhone users who were not eligible to purchase a new subsidized iPhone are now being offered the subsidized iPhone upgrade feature on their AT&T wireless account for a new two-year contract.
The new option will allow AT&T subscribers to upgrade to a new iPhone by paying an upgrade fee of $18. This will also mean that these subscribers will now have to sign up for a fresh two year contract with the carrier. If you are an AT&T subscriber, you may check your eligibility status by logging into your account at http://wireless.att.com and clicking on "Check Upgrade Options". Let us know in the comments if you have seen your iPhone upgrade eligibility date move up.
This is the latest in a series of developments at AT&T as the network carrier prepares itself for the launch of the next generation iPhone (you can checkout the details we know about Apple's new iPhone here). Last week, the company announced a major change to its smartphone data plans that saw iPhone's unlimited data plans being replaced by a tiered usage-driven data plans. AT&T has indicated that the new pricing structure will go into effect beginning today.
AT&T's move to allow subscribers to upgrade to a new iPhone comes just hours before the start of the annual Worldwide Developers Conference at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts in California. Apple has traditionally used the WWDC platform to unveil its next generation iPhone. This year too, there is a high level of anticipation over the launch of iPhone 4G, also dubbed the iPhone HD.
With just hours to go for Steve Jobs' keynote address at WWDC, we cannot wait for the show to begin. Do not forget to visit us at 10 AM Pacific Time for a live blog of the event.
