AT&T Announces New Data Plans And iPhone Tethering; Kills Unlimited Data Plans
AT&T has announced major changes to its data plans for smartphone users and finally given details about iPhone tethering.
AT&T will not be offering the unlimited data plans to new smartphone users from June 7. It will introduce two new data plans to replace its current $30 unlimited smartphone plan.
AT&T will be introducing two new data plans from June 7. They are as follows:
200MB of data for $15 per month. AT&T says this will be enough data to meet the needs of 65% of its smartphone users. If you go over the 200MB cap, AT&T will charge you $15 per 200MB if you go over the limit.
2GB of data for $25 per month. According to AT&T, only 2% of its smartphone customers manage to consume more than 2GB of data per month. AT&T will charge you $10 per GB if you go over the limit.
In addition to the changes to data plans for new smartphone users, AT&T has also announced that iPhone tethering will be available when iPhone OS 4.0 is released. AT&T is offering iPhone tethering for $20 per month. However, there is a catch. The iPhone tethering option seems to be available only to customers who opt for the DataPro plan. Users will also have to share the 2GB between your iPhone and their laptop.
If you’re an existing iPhone customer with unlimited data plans then there is some good news and bad news. First the good news, AT&T has clarified that existing iPhone users are not required to switch, even when it's time to upgrade to the new iPhone. However, the bad news is that if you opt to stick with the unlimited data plans then won't be able to opt for the tethering service as it is available only for users who have opted for the DataPro plan.
AT&T states that 98% of their smartphone customers use less than 2GB of data per month. So most users should be able to save money by switching to the new data plans. However, these changes will definitely make quite a few iPhone users very unhappy as we believe that the 2% that consume more than 2GB will be mostly iPhone users.
With Apple’s WWDC 2010 next week, the timing of AT&T announcement is quite interesting.
