1 million iPad sold

Apple has announced the sale of its one millionth iPad. The milestone comes just 28 days after the iPad went on sale on the third of last month.

The news is significant in that the iPad took less than half of the 74 days that iPhone took to reach the same milestone.

Noting the extremely high demand for iPads in the American market, Steve Jobs says:

“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone. Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

Interestingly, a significant proportion of sale has also come from the recently launched 3G enabled version of the iPad. According to Piper Jaffrey analyst Gene Munster, Apple is expected to have sold close to 300,000 units of iPad 3G through the opening weekend. It may be noted that iPads' Wi-Fi only version too sold approximately the same number of units on launch day in early April. Steve Jobs had revealed during the iPhone OS 4 media event last month that the company had sold close to 450,000 iPads inside the first week.

Apple has noted that iPad users have now downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and also close to 1.5 million ebooks have been downloaded from the iBookstore so far. It is even more amazing since all of iPad's successes till now has come from the US market as the iPad launch in the non-US market was deferred last month following the unexpected high demand in the US. The iPad is expected to go on sale in International markets only by the end of this month, which should make iPad an even bigger success.

Kudos to Apple for yet another successful product launch.
