New iPod Touch Prototype

9to5Mac have discovered two iPod Touch prototypes on eBay. The iPod Touch prototypes appears to have a camera at the back and a development version of iPhone OS.

The iPod Touch prototypes are marked with 'DVT-1' and  'DVT-2', 'Apple Development Team'.

You might remember that it was widely speculated that the third generation iPod Touch would get a camera before it was unveiled at a special event in September.

David Pogue of New York Times interviewed Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs after the special event and had asked him why Apple had omitted the camera from the iPod Touch like many had speculated.

“Mr. Jobs reiterated what Phil Schiller, the marketing vice president, had said earlier in the onstage presentation: that Apple is really pitching the iPod Touch as a game machine these days. And to do that, you have to make it as inexpensive as possible.

Originally, we weren’t exactly sure how to market the Touch. Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine,” he said. “We started to market it that way, and it just took off. And now what we really see is it’s the lowest-cost way to the App Store, and that’s the big draw. So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.”

The markings 'DVT-1' and  'DVT-2' on these iPod Touch prototypes are interesting. While commenting on the photos of the lost next generation iPhone prototype revealed by Gizmodo, John Gruber of Daring Fireball had remarked that the “DVT” stands for “design verification test”, an Apple production milestone.

Users were quite disappointed that the third generation iPod Touch didn’t include a camera. We’re quite certain that the fourth generation iPod Touch, which is expected to be unveiled in September will include a camera.

We might not see the second front-facing camera for video chat features that is most likely to be included in Apple’s new iPhone.

The listing of the two iPod Touch prototypes has been pulled from eBay just as we were publishing this article.
