In case you haven't noticed, Google has updated its Gmail web application that is aimed at simplifying the Compose Page.

In a recently published blog post, the Mountain View based company has elaborated on the newly introduced changes. These changes are part of what Google calls the 'Iterative Web App series', an initiative that started in April 2009 to release new features for Gmail for mobile.

Here is a list of changes incorporated in the redesigned compose page:

  • The recipients' email address in the 'To' field is now replaced with the corresponding contact name. Google insists that this change has been made to remove confusions arising out of vague email addresses
  • All the recipient contact names in the 'To' field are now presented as 'tappable' objects. Users willing to modify the list of recipients may simply tap on the corresponding contact names and choose to edit or delete the email address from the list.
  • Users can now tap on the backspace button to delete the most recently added contact.
  • Gmail's web application now displays the list of top contacts on the Compose page. This list may be viewed by tapping on the '+' button. Also, the user may choose to hide this list by tapping on the '-' button.
  • To enable easier inclusion of Gmail contacts in the mailing list, the new web app lets users to enter the users' Gmail username instead of the complete email address in the Compose page. For instance, hikingfan@gmail.com can be added to the list of recipients by simply typing hikingfan
  • The Compose page on Gmail's web app also sports a new interface that fills the entire page. Google explains that this has been introduced to give users more space to see what they are typing
