Google Reported To Be Working On Android OS Based Tablet Device To Take On iPad
Following Apple's successful launch of the iPad earlier this month, several players in the technology space are reported to be working on their own tablet devices to take on Apple.
Last week, PC manufacturer HP offered a sneak peek into the HP Slate which was described by the company as a device that will not only enable media consumption like the iPad, but will also improve content sharing among users.
The New York Times has now revealed that Google is among the companies working on an iPad rival. In a recently published report, the newspaper claims that the Mountain View based company is presently working in "stealth mode" with select publishers to explore the delivery of books and magazines to the Android OS based tablet. The NY Times reports:
"Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project — who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device — said the company had been experimenting in “stealth mode” with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet."
While the report does not delve into the technical aspects of the Google tablet, it will be interesting to see how the search engine giant intends to target a segment where Apple already has an early mover advantage. Relationship between the two companies have turned sour in the past few months following Google's foray into the smartphone space with the launch of Nexus One. Following this, Apple announced the launch of iAd, which is expected to take on Google's advertising platform. Competition between the iPhone and Android OS platforms has been pretty tight in recent times and we wonder if the Google backed mobile platform will be able to effectively take on the iPhone OS in the tablet segment. We can be certain that an Android based Tablet device will definitely support Adobe's Flash, which Apple continues to block from the iPhone OS platform.
