Twitter acquires Tweetie

Twitter has announced that the company is acquiring Tweetie, the hugely popular Twitter iPhone app.

In a recent blog post, Evan Williams, the CEO and co-founder of Twitter revealed that the application shall be renamed "Twitter for iPhone" and will be made available free of charge over the next few weeks.

Atebits' $2.99 Tweetie app has been pretty popular among iPhone users. So this is great news for iPhone users who have hitherto not had an official Twitter client for their smartphone.

Explaining the rationale behind the acquisition, Evan Williams writes:

"Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes AppStore revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter, and they're not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It's important that we optimize for user benefit and create an awesome experience."

The acquisition has also been confirmed by Loren Brichter, the developer behind the popular Twitter app. Terming his experience with Tweetie so far as "an amazing ride", Brichter has revealed that he shall be joining the mobile team at Twitter to continue working on the application. In a blog post on his website, Brichter notes that his work on Tweetie began with a need to "make something simple, beautiful, and intuitive". Noting the terrific growth of Tweetie over the past one year, Brichter writes:

"It’s been a wild ride since 1.0, and over the last year and a half Tweetie has gone from a no-name app from a little known software company to an app hailed as one of the best mobile experiences around.  It’s been featured in TIME and Wired, won the Apple Design Award, and I’ve had the privilege of working with the folks at Twitter from the outside as their service evolved."

Twitter's acquisition of the iPhone application is a pointer towards the company's focus on the mobile platform moving forward. Evan Williams has also indicated that a Twitter client for iPad will be released soon.

We would like to hear your views on the acquisition. We would also like to know your favorite iPhone app for Twitter and if you'll start using Twitter's official iPhone app when it is available for free.
