Verizon CEO To Apple: We Want To Carry The iPhone
Rumors of a CDMA iPhone coming to Verizon are not new. Back in April last year, Business Week had quoted sources who revealed that Cupertino was working with Verizon to launch two new "iPhone-like" devices.
Later that year, Ivan Seidenberg, the CEO at Verizon Communications expressed an intent to work with Apple and claimed that the ball was in Apple's court to take a decision.
However, things have not been smooth between the two companies since then, especially after the launch of iPhone competitor, Motorola Droid. The holiday season last year saw Verizon attack the iPhone and AT&T relentlessly in its "Droid Does" ad campaign. The company took a direct swipe at the iPhone calling it a "tiara-wearing digitally clueless beauty pageant queen".
However, with the next generation iPhone expected to launch in a few more months from now, it appears that Verizon wants to mend its relationship with Cupertino and forge a new partnership moving forward. In an interview recently before the Council of Foreign Relations, Ivan Seidenberg revealed that the company had approached Apple recently to express its interest in carrying the iPhone. Associated Press reports:
"Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg says the company has told Apple that it wants to carry the iPhone. But he declined to say when — or even if — the popular smart phone will be available for Verizon Wireless customers."
According to the report, Seidenberg also made references to a recent article on WSJ that speculated a CDMA iPhone on Verizon to launch in September of this year. The Verizon CEO however did not confirm or deny the speculations.
